Technical Center
The Huron Area Technical Center offers two
year, career orientated programs to the students of Huron County.
The
following Course Descriptions and Syllabi will assist
counselors, parents and students to make decisions regarding
enrollment in the HATC Career and Technical Education Programs.

Architecture, Engineering
& Manufacturing
Drafting is a
graphic language used by industry to communicate ideas and plans from
the design/create state through production. Drafters plan, prepare and
interpret drawings and sketches. Materials, equipment and tools common
to the Engineering, Architectural, and Graphic Design careers are used
to teach skills.
Manufacturing is the process of taking a product from conception to
marketing. Students are introduced to the design world by learning a 3D
Cad system which will allow them to create drawings of the parts they
will build. They will learn to use the machines in the manufacturing
plants and processes needed to create the product. Emphasis through out
the program will be on safety while in a shop environment.

Automotive Technology
Interested in a
fast paced, challenging career working on highly sophisticated computer
controlled vehicles? The automotive service technology program
offers nationally accredited (NATEF/ASE) training. Individualized
instructional plans allow opportunities for students to experience many
of the specific areas of certification: brakes and system repair,
suspension and alignment, electrical diagnosis and repair, engine
operation and repair, drive trains and manual transmission, engine
performance as well as heating and air conditioning systems.
Training involves classroom instruction as well as hands on experience
with our live production service floor. Students will have the
option of attaining state or national mechanic certification as well as
competing for various scholarships through our very active youth club.

Construction/Building
Technology
This program
trains individuals in the skills needed for residential construction.
Areas of study include framing and finish carpentry, roofing, siding,
drywall, cabinetmaking and trim. Residential plumbing focuses on
installation of supplies, drain, waste and vent systems and fixture
installation. Student training in masonry includes brick and block
laying with emphasis on trowel techniques, layout, patterns and bonds
typical of residential building construction. Residential wiring
includes code requirements, circuit design and installation of fixtures.
Advanced electricity includes basic electronics, electric motors,
magnetic starters, logic circuits and programmable logic controllers.
Students in the Construction/Building Technology program completely
construct a three-bedroom home on-site at the Huron Area Technical
Center each year.

Cosmetology
The State Board of
Cosmetology governs the Cosmetology Program. This is a 1500-hour
program offered to eleventh and twelfth grade students. Adult
students return for a seven-hour day to finish the program, which
usually is completed during the fifth semester. The program includes
hair shaping, scalp treatments, styling, coloring and texturizing of
hair. Students will be trained in facials, hair removal, hygiene,
patron protection, customer relations, sales, and salon management.
VISIONS, a full service salon, is managed by the students and is open to
the public. The curriculum is based on the requirements from the
State Board of Cosmetology. Therefore, students are prepared to
pass the State Board Test and earn the State Board of Cosmetology
License. Once licensed, the student will have the opportunity to
work in a salon or continue their education.

Childhood Professions
Early Childhood
Professions is an instructional program that focuses on childhood growth
and development while preparing students for careers in early childhood
education. The program operates Kid's World Preschool in which the
students work directly with children ages three to five years old in a
laboratory setting. Students learn age appropriate activities and
behaviors for preschool age children. The students will have the
opportunity to explore career choices through work experience at local
schools and daycare centers. Students will have the choice to explore
infancy through school age programs. The students will be
certified in C.P.R. and first aid and will have the opportunity to
receive articulated credits from local colleges and universities.

Health Sciences
The Allied Health
Technologies program provides opportunities for students to experience
and perfect skills required of today's health care industry.
Students learn human structure and function; communication skills;
medical terminology; infection control and the skills needed to measure
vital signs, such as temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
Students will be certified in First Aid and Basic Life Support,
experience approximately 16 days of non-paid work experience, receive
one science credit, and enroll in college courses. Second year
students mentor an actual health care facility approximately three days
per week for seven months. The job opportunities for health care
providers exceed the supply in most areas of the United States.

Hospitality/Food Service
The demand for
hospitality/food service workers at every level is high. The
Hospitality/Food Service curriculum concentrates on skills from entry
level to management. They include: table service, cash
handling, customer relations, baking, quantity food preparation, short
order cookery, sanitation, culinary arts, garde-manger and management.
Students operate The Snack Shop and a banquet facility at the Technical
Center, as well as a restaurant, the Main Street Cafe'. The
Hospitality component explores the lodging, travel and tourism
industries and offers job specific training in each area. Upon
graduation, students are ready for continuing career education or
entry-level employment.

Information
Management Systems
Business services are one of the fastest growing
occupational areas in our economy. Successful businesses
rely on office and computer professionals for smooth
operation. The Information Management Systems program
provides students with skills that will be necessary to be
successful in today’s information-based economy.
Information Management Systems students learn basic office
skills including preparation of documents using computers
and other modern office equipment, filing, telephone usage
and mail handling. Training includes internet usage,
computer support, computer operating systems and computer
applications including word processing, managing databases,
preparing spreadsheets, web page design and desktop
publishing. Students develop the personal
characteristics that employers seek in job candidates and
participate in on the job training in an actual business
office. IMS training can lead to such jobs as office
assistant, information processing specialist, medical and
legal office specialists, computer specialist, and graphic
and web page design careers. Students have the option
of being involved in Business Professionals of America and
competing at Delta College Business Division Skill Day
competition as well as participating in community service
projects and becoming Microsoft Office Specialist certified.

Marketing
Do you like
people? Can you persuade some to do things? Perhaps you need
to consider "marketing" - a program that incorporates people
skills/communication/creativity. The many facets of marketing
allows for growth, both professional and personal. Marketing
offers the first fully visual "Business Simulation" software, Virtual
Business Retailing and Virtual Business Management; with well suited
activities in which students control all aspects of their business.
Hands-on activities include operating the campus store, designing and
arranging displays as well as personal selling skills.

DECA Student Organization |
Power Technology
This program will
help prepare you for a challenging occupation, ranging from a heavy
equipment technician, equipment operator to working in the sales field
in the truck, off-road equipment or A.T.V. business. Our
individualized program enables students to maintain and repair
recreational, agricultural and heavy equipment. You will tune up,
troubleshoot and overhaul gasoline and diesel engines. You will
become familiar with suspensions, power trains, hydraulics, air
conditioning and electronics. You will have the option of
attaining State Mechanical Certification. Our program has an
articulation agreement with Ferris State University for 12 credits.
